Synopsis and more information

The action revolves around the meeting between St John the Baptist and Salome amid the triangle of tensions surrounding Herod’s court.

The prophet publicly denounces the illicit relationship between Herod and Herodias, making her resentful.

Meanwhile, Salome, at the instigation of her mother, Herodias, uses her charm to manipulate Herod and obtain the prophet’s head. After the famous dance, Herod, trapped between his desire and his oath, orders the decapitation of John the Baptist.

The opera ends in a climate of guilt, remorse and tragedy, underlining the innocence of the martyr and the corrupt nature of the environment that condemns him.
